Initial Statement of Educational Philosophy

Often times I am presented with the question as to why I want to teach. Simply put, I want to make a difference. Teachers are given the opportunity to see the difference they make in the lives of students as the students gain insight and knowledge, become more interested in a subject, and begin to learn more about themselves. As an educator, you encourage creativity, develop character, and help to provide students with the skills they need in order to reach their greatest potential. As an end result, I want my students to achieve their maximum potential and achieve nothing but success on their educational journey. My challenge of teaching is to help improve a child’s strength and weaknesses. I also feel as though an educator should provide access to information rather than acting as a primary source of information. Vygotsky a scholar also felt as though children can learn on their own through the process of ‘trial-and-error’, while teachers are here to guide them.

Academic learning must begin with motivation and inspiration. It is important for students to have an educator who is passionate for both teaching and learning. In order to achieve active learning, teachers must display a high level of enthusiasm and express great confidence in the students’ ability to learn. Some methods and strategies that will help me accomplish my teaching goals is to provide students access to hands-on activities and enough time and space to use materials provided for a lesson. Not only will it give them the opportunity to discover, it will also help them gain knowledge on their own. Equally important to self-discovery is having the opportunity to study things that are meaningful and relevant to one's life and interests. It is important for teachers to develop a curriculum around the student’s interests. This will motivate and it stimulates a child’s passion to learn. One way to take learning in a direction relevant to a student’s interest is to invite student dialogue about the lessons and units of study. For example given the opportunity for input, students can generate ideas and set goals that make for much richer activities than I could have created or imagined myself. When students take ownership of the curriculum, they are motivated to work hard and master the skills necessary to reach their goals. This can be done once a week so that each child has had an opportunity to learn something in their interest.

Aside from the teaching and learning of reading, writing, math, and science I want to ensure that my students develop a deep love and respect for themselves, others, and their environment, which occurs through an open sharing of ideas and a thoughtful approach to discipline. When the voice of each student is heard, an environment evolves where students feel free to express themselves. In setting fair and consistent rules initially and stating the importance of every activity, students are shown respect for their presence and time. In turn they learn to respect themselves, others, and their environment.

I believe teaching provides an opportunity for continual learning and growth. One of my hopes as future teacher is to introduce a love of learning in my students, as I share my own passion for learning with them. I feel there is a need for compassionate, strong, and dedicated individuals who are excited about working with children. In our competitive society it is important for students to not only receive a solid education, but to work with someone who is aware of and sensitive to their individual needs. I am that person and will always strive to be the best educator that I can be.
