Title: Masks

Grade: 3rd

Time Allotted for Lesson: 30 minutes

                                             This lesson will be completed in one session.

 

Instructional Objectives:       

  1. Students will learn that every culture has their own mask.
  2. Will be able to create a mask.
  3. To be able to have an understanding about masks.

Vocabulary:                           

  1. culture
  2. vibrant
  3. diverse

Materials:                               

  1. Visuals of masks from diverse cultures
  2. Crayola Modeling Clay
  3. Glitter Glue
  4. Construction Paper

Motivation: I will read the book to the students to help spark their interest.

 

Questions:

  1. Why are masks created?
  2. What type of mask is made in your culture?
  3. How will you create a mask that represents you?

Procedure:                             

  1. Pass around the visuals of masks from the different cultures.
  2. Hand out Crayola Modeling Clay.
  3. Have the glitter glue handed out.
  4. Ask students to design a mask that represents them.
  5. Students will put their finished work on construction paper.
  6. Students will share their mask they made with the class.

Student Evaluation: Evaluate the student’s progress.

  1. How are people affected by masks?
  2. How do you tell the difference between each mask?
  3. Why do you think diverse cultures have masks?

Extension Activities: Using the mask that you made, write a description of how your makes reminds you of your culture.

 

Attach Visuals to the Lesson Plan: Show pictures of masks that relate to the lesson.
