Science Lesson Plan B

Topic/Concept: Fruits are an important part of healthy eating. Fruits give us lots of energy and help us stay strong. Some common fruits we know are Apples, Apricots, Bananas, Cherries, Grapefruit, Grapes, Kiwi fruit, Lemons, Limes, Mangoes, Nectarines, Oranges, Peaches, Pears, Papaya, Pineapple, Plums, Prunes, Raisins, and Tangerines.

Objective: Use the chart provided to estimate whether the fruit will sink or float. Do not do the experiment before you have completed the chart.

Preparation: Introduce the chart to the children and fill it out together.

Materials: Bowl with water, different types of fruit.

Lesson:

  1. After the chart has been filled out, have the children work by table.
  2. Each table should drop the fruit into the bowl with water one at a time.

  4. Ask the children to peel the orange and drop it into the bowl of water.

Assessment: On a piece of paper, answer the following: Why do you think the orange sunk after it was peeled? Wouldn’t it make more sense for it to float since it was “less heavy”?

Writing Lesson Plan

Topic/Concept: Fruits are an important part of healthy eating. Fruits give us lots of energy and help us stay strong. Some common fruits we know are Apples, Apricots, Bananas, Cherries, Grapefruit, Grapes, Kiwi fruit, Lemons, Limes, Mangoes, Nectarines, Oranges, Peaches, Pears, Papaya, Pineapple, Plums, Prunes, Raisins, and Tangerines.

Objective: Create a book with the letters of the alphabet and a corresponding fruit. The letters will go from Z to A instead of A to Z.

Preparation: Discuss previous assignment concerning the alphabet banners and both books read to the class Eating the Alphabet (Lois Elhert) & All about Fruits (Vic Parker).

Materials: Eating the Alphabet (Lois Elhert) & All about Fruits (Vic Parker), construction paper, pencils, markers, yarn, and a hole puncher.

Lesson:

  1. On a piece of construction paper the children will write a letter and corresponding fruit with name of the fruit. They will do this for all 26 letters of the alphabet. The children can color and decorate the paper however they like.
  2. Once the letters are completed, have the children make holes on the sheets of construction paper so they are leveled with each other.
  3. With the yarn, have the children “sew” the pages together.

Assessment: Read the book to your class. How is your classmates book different from yours? The same?
