Title: Finger-painting

Time Lesson Begins: 10:00 AM

Time Lesson Ends: 11:00 AM

Location of Lesson: Table near Art Center

Number of Children Involved: 4-6

Age of Children Involved: 3.5 to 5 years old

Objective:

  1. The children will explore mixing colors.
  2. The children will be introduced to the terms ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’.
  3. The children will be exercising their fine motor skills.

Materials:

  1. Finger paint paper (shiny)
  2. Washable finger paint
  3. Paper Plates
  4. Smocks

Introduction: “We are going to paint today. But…we will not be using brushes or sticks, so what else can we use?” (Listen to suggestions and inform them they will be using their hands and fingers.) “You can draw whatever you like using the paint.”

Procedure:

  1. When every child has their own sheet of paper, place blobs of paint in separate sections of the paper plate.
  2. Instruct the children to paint what they want with any color they want with their hands.
  3. When the children are finished with this piece of paper, provide them with a new sheet.
  4. Place all colors of paints on the paper.
  5. Instruct the children paint with these colors.

Clean-up:

The children are instructed to clean off excess paint with a baby wipe. They were then taken to the restroom to wash their hands. Their paintings should be placed on a rack to dry.

Evaluation:

All objectives were met for this lesson. The children had a better understanding of secondary colors and how to make them. They worked great with the paint and their hands. The children had one whole hour to complete both paintings but were all done 45 minutes into the hour. If I were to do this lesson again, -which I’m sure I will since the children very much enjoyed it- I would make sure the children have enough space to work. These children had space but I didn’t feel it was enough since their plates were near the other child’s.
