                                           Pre-Jeopardy Game Preview

•    This is a map of North America

•    Can someone come up to the map & show me were New York is ?

•    Can someone come up and show me the Atlantic Ocean is located?

•    New is bordered by Pennslyvania , New Jersey & Connecticut Massachusetts and Vermont to

 

Slide 3 New York Land forms

•    New York State has many different landforms which some include mountains, valleys, forests and rolling hill & flat plans

•    NY also has  little streams, rapid rivers with waterfalls and beaches on the ocean

•    What is a landform? is a natural feature of the earth’s surface.

•    New York’s highest  land region is the Adirondacks mountains  (A di ron dack)

•    This is a map of New York State (mainland & islands)

 

•    The Capital of New York is Albany, can someone come up & point to where  Albany is located!?

•    Can anyone point to where Brooklyn (Kings County) is on the map!?

•    NY is also made up of 5 boroughs : Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn & Staten Island

•    A borough is a divison of the city, that retain local governaces.

•    New York is also made up of 3 major islands & part of U.S mainland: Manhattan, Long Islnd & Staten Island

•    New York consist of 291 neighborhoods

•    Does anyone know what a neighborhood is? It’s a location, often recognized by its character (An attitude, or trait that describe something) or inhabitants (lives in a certain place)

•    NY has a population of over 8 million people, it’s the most populated cityin the United states.

 

 

 

New York lakes & rivers (slide 5)

•    The Atlantic Ocean is part of the state's southeastern border

•    Two of the Great Lakes form the borders of New York.  Lake Ontario forms part of the state's northern border.  Lake Erie is on part of New York's western border.

 

•    New York’s 3 major bodies of water are the Hudson river (longest river), Mohawk river, and the Oswego river

 

 

New York Symbols (slide 6)

•    State Flag: On the left is Liberty (she symbolizes freedom) and on the right is Justice (she symbolizes justice before the law). Liberty is holding a pole with a liberty cap, and has a discarded crown at her feet (which represents freedom from Britain after the Revolutionary War).

 

 

New York Landmarks (slide 7)

•    a landmark is a object or feature of a landscape or town that is easily seen and recognized from a distance,

•    Some important landmarks in New York are:

1.    Statue of liberty (A gift to the United States from the people of France)- A female figure holding a  torch(law), representing  freedom. designed by Frédéric Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886

2.    The Empire State Building is a 102-story landmark skyscraper and is the tallest buildings in new York, nickname for New York, the Empire State.

3.    Ellis Island, From 1892 to 1924, Ellis Island was America's largest and most active immigration station, For a majority of immigrants, Ellis Island truly was an "Island of Hope" - the first stop on their way to new opportunities and experiences in America.

 

 

•    Slide 8- Culture in New York

•    - What is Culture ? It is the language ,customs, art & beliefs of a particular group of people.

•    NY is the largest immigrant populated city in the world.

 

•    An immigrant is A person who leaves one country to settle permanently in another.

•    That’s why NY is called a “Melting Pot” A place where different people, nationalities, races & cultures blend together.

•    It is known as a financial, cultural, transportation, and manufacturing center, and also for its diversity of many different cultures.

 

•    Immigrants had often settled near friends & families, forming neighborhoods.

•    A neighborhood usually was made up of a specific ethnic group

•    An ethnic group is a group of people who share a race, religion nationality or culture.

•    In these neighborhoods they could speak their own language and practice their own beliefs.

•    Some ethnic neighborhoods in NY, for example there are many Jewish people living in Brooklyn. In areas such as , Ocean Pkwy & Borough Park Chinatown in NYC is one of the largest populations of Chinese people in  NY , Italian neighborhoods are in Staten Island & parts of Brooklyn. African Americans populate much of Harlem and much of  Brooklyn.

•    So all these different cultures came to New York and brought their native foods.

Slide 9- Cultural contributions

•    When new immigrants arrived they brought their own heritage . Heritage is something passed down from 1 generation to the next, such as language, traditions, food, and  beliefs.

•    People of NY speak many diff.  languages, and only half  of  NY speak English

•    Many cultures contributed to form new arts, dance and music in New York making it so diverse. Some types of music  are jazz, blues & rock. It is the birth place of hip hop, disco & salsa  along with many more.

•    With the many different cultures in NY we have been introduced from foods from all around the world.

 

 

Slide 10-Traditional foods

Include:

•    Pizza, which  Italian immigrants brought here from Italy.  Ny is known for it’s thin style crust pizza

 

•    Bagels were contributions from Eastern European Jews.  It is a soft, chewy dough, usually served with butter or cream cheese, also it’s a breakfast that can be eaten on the run.

 

•    New York Style Cheesecake, is a dessert consisting of a topping made of soft, fresh cheese, usually on a crust or base made from biscuit (such as a graham cracker crust), and has a  smooth texture. It came from Greece originally but Italians brought it to New York

 

•    Hotdogs a finger food the Germans brought to NY. It is a Street food, sold by vendors (street carts in NY)

 

•    Hot pretzels is a type of baked food made from dough in soft savory or sweet flavor in a unique knot-like shape, originating in Europe.

 

So all the different cultures that came to NY brought their own native foods which NY has become a traditional food of New York

Slide 11- Early Settlers History of New York

•    New York was inhabited by various tribes of Algonquian and Iroquoian speaking Native American tribes

•    The Algonquin Indians lived in Northeast where present day New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware are now.

•    The land varied from ocean beaches and marshlands to forests, rivers, and valleys.

•    The Algonquians lived by hunting, gathering & trading

•    The Algonquin lived in wigwams, mostly farmed, and wore little clothing.

•    Wigwams was a house made of wood frame & woven reeds

•    They used natural resources to live:

•    Natural Resources are things that come from nature and the earth

•     example of natural resources they used were: trees ( to make canoes & boats), create fires ( for warmth & cooking) Animals for clothing , also stayed near rivers to fishing and bathing.

•    After the Indians used up all their Natural resources they used a newer technology called farming crops such as corn and squash.

•    Now at the time Dutch settlers moved into the region around the early 17th century. In 1609, the region was first claimed by Henry Hudson for the Dutch

•    The Dutch soon also settled New Amsterdam and parts of the Hudson River Valley, establishing the colony of New Netherland, which is also known as New York in present day
