                            Read Alouds: Lots of Opposites by Christy Webster

 

Date of Lesson: April 22, 2011

 

Time Allotted: 30 minutes

Location: Classroom

 Ages : 3-4 yrs Old

Lesson Activity: Opposites

 

Goals:

 

a)The goal of this lesson plan is for the kids to recognize the difference & similarities of opposites. The children will demonstrate by using a few techniques to identify opposites.

 

b) Goals for social science read alludes are the following:

-the kids will make predictions about the story

-the children will connect the story to their own experiences

The kids will interact w/ each other in relation to the story when 

 

Materials:

-Partners

-Sesame Street Book

-Flash Cards

 

Process: Intro:

 

a) Today we will be reading the book "Lots of Opposites"

 

Development:

a)When Im done reading this book the kids should be able to recognize the difference between opposites. I will ask them questions about what happen in the story.

 

 

** Read the book

 

Questions:

 

Page 1- What is the opposite on this page? Can anyone tell me?

( Big Bird Big & Elmo Small)

 

Page 4- What is opposite with the cookie Jar ?

( Cookie jar empty & plate is empty)

 

 

Page 7- What is the opposite you see on this page? 

(Elmo is in front & Grover is back of him)

 

 

Page 8- What is the opposite you can find on this page?

(Ernie is big & bug is small, )

 

Page 10- what is the opposite on these two pages?

( Door is closed & door is open)

 

 

Page 14- can you find the opposite of Oscar & Elmo on this page?

(Oscar is in & Elmo is Out)

 

Book is open and now it is closed!!

 

Does anyone know of something they do that can be opposite of something they do everyday?

 

- when you eat dinner your plate is full & when you eat all your food your plate is empty!

-You wake up in the morning & go to sleep at night there are two opposites here- day & night, awake & sleep

 

 

Activity: Recognizing Opposites Game

 

The children will participate by standing in a line all facing the teacher.

I will go through 20 flash cards that have words & images of an action.

I will ask the kids what they see and to show me the opposite of that action, and they will have to show me using their body language & words. 

 

 

Closure:

 

a) Does anyone remember what happen in the story, Let the kids recall parts of the book.

 

b)I will go through the pages of the book to help the kids recognize what each of the opposites mean completely. So they will get a clear understanding of not only the actn but the meaning of why they can get that reaction.

 

-The opposite of hello is goodbye? What are the reasons people say hello? ( To greet people in a polite manner)

 

-Why is a book open ? And then why does it close?

open: We are reading or looking at pictures 

closed: we are finished looking & reading the book

 

-why are these shoes old &* Ernies are new?

Old: they have been used & worn and they get dirty from being worn outside or being used

New: Never worn yet, just made

 

-Why is this jar full & this plate empty?

Full: bc We filled the cookie jar up & noone ate them yet

Empty: bc people have been eating the cookies & no more left
