Chant w/ Shakers

Session 4

 

 

St. Bernards School

Pre K ( 4-5)

Objective:

 

The purpose of this lesson plan is so the children can recognize the beat in today's chant. They will demonstrate the beat using their bodies as percussion and than after demonstrating the beat with the  shakers.

 

Materials:

 

  • Shakers
  • Recorder
  • Hands 

 

Location:

Back of the Classroom

 

 

Procedure:

Intro/Warm Up 

 

Good Morning boys & girls! My name is Ms. Lauren

 

Today were going to find the beat.

 

Can you all follow me and show me how you can clap your hands

 

(Start clapping to the beat)

 

Good you just found the beat to the song

 

Good, Now I'm going to sing a song while I clap my hands to the beat…

 

I have to use my singing voice to sing, like this ( singing voice) 

 

Can everyone show me their singing voice ( children demonstrate)

 

Ready, here we go: "Clap,clap,clap your hands"

 

Than I want you all to sing along and clap your hands to the beat with me

 

Ready 1, 2, 3 ( sing ) "Clap, clap, clap your hands "

 (Clap hands)

 

 Ver Nice! Now boys & girls I wanna introduce you to my instruments..

 

Here we have 3 instruments, that are called shakers. I have 2 different size can you show me by pointing which one is taller?  (Good) Now show me the shorter instrument (Very good) And what 2 are the same size ? ( Good Job)

 

We use these kind of instruments to find the beat in a song or chant.

 

Let me show you how we can use them for the song we just sang! 

 

(Using shakers tapping the instrument on leg, sing  song)

 

 Ready 1, 2, 3 .."clap, clap, clap your hands " 

 

Who wants to try using the shakers? (give the children a shaker each. Okay now were going to sing the song again using the shakers, and you have to either tap it on your leg, tap it on your hand or shake it in the air to the beat.. Let me show you …

 

Now can you show me how you would use the shaker when we sing.? ( let them each show you)

 

Ok good, now when we sing the song your going to have tap them on your body to show me you can find the beat..

 

Ready 1, 2, 3 " Clap, clap, clap your hands"

(Using shakers)

 

Good now I have another game were going to learn, its called a chant.. This time instead of using our singing voices were going to talk soft ( almost like a whisper)  and say the music, instead of singing it.

 

Let me show you ready here we go  "Bakery shop, using the shakers" (Say the chant, w/ shakers)

 

Now, were all going to try together using our regular speaking voices, and our shakers… Everyone follow me ready 1, 2, 3 " bakery shop"

 

Conclusion:

 

Good job boys & girls, __(name)___, can you demonstrate how you can find the beat using the shaker? ( children show) 

 

Good, and now lets see how you can find the beat using your hands ( children show you) 

 

Now show me your singing voice ( children show you)
