Read Aloud Activity Report

Book Information:

Title: My little neighborhood

Author:

Topic: The topic of this book was about the different things in a neighborhood. The book makes the children feel more comfortable and relaxed in the classroom setting letting them know the roles in a neighborhood and what makes a neighborhood.

Age Group: The age group that I read this book to were pre- k in which the children are three to four years old.

 Sequence of the Activity/ Lesson:

First the teacher selected a few children (about 5) to come sit in the reading area, which has a quiet setting, to come sit with me. The children were already comfortable with me so there was no need to introduce my self to the children. I then showed them the book and asked them what they saw. I listed to each child’s response.  I also told the different parts of the book.  Before I could tell them the title, one of the children asked me what the words said on the front of the book.  They told me what they saw andthought of the picture on the back of the book.I then started to read the book to the children. I asked them what they noticed on the first page and they describe the different stores, and roles in a neighborhood.  They described the characters clothing and reacted to the words. I also explained to them what some of the words meanings were that seemed a little advance for the children. As I read the story I asked them things thats in their neighborhood. For example “what are the fun things you do in your neighborhood”.  I listened to each child’s response so they would be able to make connections to the book with their personal lives and past experiences.

I continued to ask the children questions about the different pictures they saw and some of them described what they looked like and made connections in the story. To make sure I did not loose their attention I had to keep involving them by asking them to describe what they saw in the illustrations. I also asked them to count things they saw so they would be practicing their math skills.

To make sure the children remembered the books sequence and details, I asked them questions about the book to see if the recalled.  Some of them described the scenes and pictures they saw and connected them with the experiences they had like playing in the park..  One little girl told me that her and her mother went to the post office to drop a package off. Another little boy told me that him and his mom went on the train and how he enjoy riding on the trains.I then asked the children to draw and color their favorite part of the book and we spoke about it.

Reflection:

To improve this activity, I would have created a more creative way to introduce the book to the children. I would have also come up with more open-ended questions for the children to answer.
